Fresh Blood Flows into Legendary Asian Filmmaker

To continue the Group’s unparalleled run of smash hit box office records, OSGH has strengthened its movie production and financing team by acquiring Chengtian Zhihong TV&Film Production Co., (later renamed as Beijing Orange Sky Golden Sky Film & TV Production Company Limited), has invested in renowned movies including “Warlords”, “Red Cliff” and “The Founding of a Party”. The acquisition will provide an opportunity for the Group to further develop the Group’s business network and capabilities in Mainland China, which cover not just developing and distributing Chinese-language contents, but also understanding local customers’ tastes and marketing the Group’s offering to their needs.

Back in the 70s, the Group’s "The Invincible Eight" and "Shaolin Boxer" set a trend for martial arts movies which reached the summit after Bruce Lee joined the Group and being the leading star of the movies "The Big Boss", "Fist of Fury", "The Chinese Connection", "Enter the Dragon", "Return of the Dragon" and "Game of Death".

Also in the 70s, the Group signed Sammo Hung as director, spurring action-comedy tradition with "Iron-Fisted Monk", "Knockabout" and "Prodigal Son". Michael Hui and his brothers made the first modern social comedy films including "Games Gamblers Play", "The Private Eyes" and "The Contract". Besides breaking box office records in Southeast Asia, these films crossed over into the Japanese market as a series under the title "Mr. Boo". Since the 70s, the Group had become the world’s largest Chinese language movie production company.

From late 70s to early 80s, Jackie Chan’s directorial and starring debut, "The Young Master", wowed Japan. His movie "Project A" continued to bring the “Golden Harvest” brand to new heights of popularity in Japan. He also starred in his first Hollywood film, "The Battlecreek Brawl" (aka "The Big Brawl").

In the 90s, "The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" put the “Golden Harvest” brand onto the international map again by making new box office records, and later spawned two sequels. During the period, the Group’s China outpost had a hit with "The Soong Sisters", "The Stormriders”, which set a milestone for Hong Kong film computer technology, "Hot War" and "A Man Called Hero". "The Stormriders" also set a new HK record for an opening weekend. Romantic comedy "Fly Me to Polaris", starring new actress Cecilia Cheung, set box office records across Asia during Chinese New Year.

Action adventure "Tokyo Raiders” opened in a scale never achieved before, in more than 1,200 screens across Asia, including 1,000 screens in Mainland China. The Group received audience and industry accolades for "Lavender", Hong Kong's first "scented" movie with specially synchronized machines ejected aromas through theatres during the movie. “The Accidental Spy", starring Jackie Chan, became the highest grossing Chinese language movie at box offices in Hong Kong, Mainland China, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, Indonesia and Thailand.
